As part of a joint agreement in August 2015, Canada and the United States of America agreed to secure the border of the two countries. As a result of this agreement, Canada launched the Visa Waiver Program for certain visa-exempt countries. Citizens of these countries can travel to Canada by applying for a visa online via eTA (ETA).
Citizens of these countries can obtain visas through an online portal without visiting the Canadian Embassy or Canadian Consulate. The electronic or online Canadian visa only applies to the business, transit or tourist categories. The duration of a Canadian visa can be valid for up to 5 years but you cannot stay more than 6 months in Canada with an electronic visa.
Who can apply for a Canadian electronic visa (eVISA) or eTA?
Canada offers online visa or eTA to over 57 countries based on data available as of May 1, 2022. Citizens of these countries must obtain a visa before arriving in the country. Citizens of Canada or the United States only need their respective passport to travel. Legal permanent residents of the United States who have US green cards also do not need to apply for an eVisa to travel to Canada, but they should bring the following:
- Valid passport from their country
- Proof of U.S. permanent resident status (e.g. Green Card (Permanent Resident Card).
- But if you are visiting Canada by air on a commercial or charter visa, you need an electronic or (eTA) visa to travel to Canada.
