The US Mission to India on Friday released more than 100,000 H&L visa appointments for workers and their families. The appointments come at a time of high demand for employment-based visas. Additionally, the US Mission to India said the decision was made taking into account people who have been unable to return home and see their families since the start of the pandemic.

“In response to the high demand for employment-based visas, the U.S. Mission in India recently released more than 100,000 appointments for H&L workers and their families. Thousands of applicants have already made appointments and the Waiting time for interview waiver and first appointments has been cut in half in Mission India,” the US Embassy in India tweeted.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar had raised the issue of visa delays with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken last month.

In the first nine months of 2022, the US mission in India has already processed more than 160,000 H&L visas, she further informed. On Friday, wait times for new B1 and B2 visa applicants were 884 days in Delhi and 872 in Mumbai, approaching 2.5 years.

The L-1 and H-1B visas are among the most popular nonimmigrant work visas in the United States. While L-1 is more suitable for those who work for multinational corporations, the H-1B visa finds more use for those who intend to work for US companies and want greater job flexibility.
