The ROK Embassy in Doha held an event celebrating the Korean National Day or “Gaecheonjeol” on Tuesday.
Among the dignitaries who attended the cake cutting ceremony at the Ritz Carlton Doha were Transport Minister HE Jassim Saif Al Sulaiti; Minister of Communications and Information Technology HE Mohammed Ali Al Mannai; Director of Protocol Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs HE Ibrahim Fakhroo; Eritrean Ambassador to Qatar and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps HE Ali Ibrahim Ahmed, along with other Ambassadors.
In his speech, Korea’s Ambassador to Qatar, HE Joon-ho Lee, highlighted the long-awaited World Cup which will start in a month.
“The year 2022 is a great moment for Qatar. This World Cup will be memorable not only because it is the first-ever World Cup in the Middle East, but also the biggest post-pandemic sporting event. that will connect us with hope, friendship and solidarity,” the Ambassador said.
As Qatar prepares for the tournament, the envoy stressed that Korea “has been with Qatar throughout the journey.”
Korean companies have participated in the development of major infrastructure in the country, including the Doha Metro, the Lusail highway and the design of the Al Thumama stadium.
The ambassador also said Korean military police trainers are cooperating closely with the Qatari military police for the World Cup.
“I’m sure this World Cup will be the biggest moment for Qatar,” he said.
Ambassador Lee stressed that bilateral relations between Korea and Qatar over the past five decades are solid. “Korea is one of the biggest trading partners, one of the biggest importers of LNG and an important investor for Qatar.”
The trade volume between the two countries last year reached 12 billion dollars.
Cooperation between Qatar and Korea has expanded into new areas: green energy, smart agriculture and health.
This year alone, Korea’s Samsung C&T won the contract for two solar power plants in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan Industrial City, which “exemplifies the two countries’ close cooperation to build the global green energy supply chain”.
The envoy also mentioned several official visits and meetings of senior government officials over the past few months, and in September the visa waiver agreement entered into force by the two countries.
Korea’s National Day celebrates Gaecheonjeol, which is Korea’s National Foundation Day, which is held every October 3 every year. Gaecheonjeol means “the day the sky opened its doors”, symbolizing the birth of the Korean nation 4,300 years ago.
