“Head of the Directorate of Bilateral Relations Nils Jansons expressed to the representative of Russia the strongest condemnation of Russia’s unjustified invasion of the territory of Ukraine. It was stressed that Russia is fully responsible for the situation and its consequences, including the loss of innocent lives,” the Foreign Office reported.
A diplomatic note is an internationally recognized means of expressing serious protest against the actions of another country. Russia has received many of these in recent days.
Nils Jansons stressed that the Latvian Foreign Ministry calls on Russia to immediately cease its armed aggression against Ukraine, withdraw its armed forces from all Ukrainian territory and de-escalate the situation with a view to a political solution.
The CEO informed the Chargé d’Affaires that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to recall the Latvian Ambassador to Russia, Māris Riekstiņš, for consultations regarding Russia’s actions, as well as to suspend, for a indefinite period, the issuance of visas to Russian nationals, except for humanitarian reasons and other special cases.
